나는 3위의 시성(詩聖)뿐만 아니라 교회의 삶에 관한 매우 중대한 결정을 전하고자 이번 추기경회의를 소집했습니다. 하느님 앞에서 나의 양심을 거듭 성찰한 결과 고령으로 내 기력으로는 더는 교황의 직무를 적절히 수행하기에 적합하지 않다는 확신한 결론에 이르렀습니다. 교황의 직무는 영적인 특성상 언행은 물론 그 못지않게 기도와 고통으로 수행돼야 함을 나는 잘 알고 있습니다. 그러나 많은 변화가 빠르게 일어나고 충실한 신앙생활에 대한 의문들로 흔들리는 오늘날 성교회를 다스리고 복음을 전파하려면 심신의 강건함이 모두 필요합니다.

그렇지만, 지난 몇 달간 저의 기력은 제게 부여된 직무를 적절히 수행하기에 불가능함을 인정하지 않을 수 없을 정도로 악화했습니다. 이런 이유로 나는 이 결정의 중요성을 충분히 인식하고서, 완전한 자의에 의해 2005년 4월 19일 추기경단이 나에게 부여한 성베드로의 후계자인 교황직의 포기를 선합니다. 2013년 2월 28일 오후 8시 이후 교황직은 공석이 되고 새 교황 선출을 위한 콘클라베(교황선출 비밀회의)가 소집돼야 할 것입니다. 사랑하는 형제 여러분. 재임 기간 여러분이 보여준 사랑과 지지에 진심으로 감사하며 부족한 점이 있었다면 용서를 구합니다.

그리고 이제 교회를 우리의 최고 목자이시며 우리 주이신 예수그리스도께 맡기고, 성모 마리아께 새 교황을 선출해야 할 추기경들을 도와달라고 간청합시다.

저는 앞으로도 평생을 헌신하는 목회자로서 교회를 헌신적으로 섬기기를 바랍니다.

Dear Brothers,

I have convoked you to this Consistory, not only for the three canonizations, but also to communicate to you a decision of great importance for the life of the Church. After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry. I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with words and deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering. However, in today’s world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the bark of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me. For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals on 19 April 2005, in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked by those whose competence it is.

Dear Brothers, I thank you most sincerely for all the love and work with which you have supported me in my ministry and I ask pardon for all my defects. And now, let us entrust the Holy Church to the care of Our Supreme Pastor, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and implore his holy Mother Mary, so that she may assist the Cardinal Fathers with her maternal solicitude, in electing a new Supreme Pontiff. With regard to myself, I wish to also devotedly serve the Holy Church of God in the future through a life dedicated to prayer.
